Why do we continue to service Big Oil with billions in tax breaks and subsidies?
Washington is still struggling to move from lip-service to action and someone needs to be held accountable.
They talk a good game on the campaign trail. But how committed are our elected politicians to ending this addiction to oil?
Let's find out.
Below you will find a list of the oil and gas industry's top 20 donations during the 2005-2006 election cycle. The following information was released by the Federal Election Commission, and provided by the Center for Responsive Politics.
It shows the top 20 recipients of contributions from the oil and gas industries.
Kay Hutchinson (R-TX) - $317,586
Rick Santorum (R-PA) - $260, 500
Conrad Burns (R-MT) - $237,725
George Allen (R-VA) - $216,600
James M. Talent (R-MO) - $212,920
Denise Bode (R-OK) - $194,818
Richard Pombo (R-CA) - $194,298
Bob Corker (R-TN) - $190,350
Joe Barton (R-TX) - $188,700
John Cornyn (R-TX) - $182,200
Mary Fallin (R-OK) - $169,950
Heather Wilson (R-NM) - $149,350
Steve Pearce (R-NM) - $136,328

Mike DeWine (R-OH) - $121,650
Henry Bonilla (R-OH) - $121,426
Tom DeLay (R-TX) - $118,890
Now just because the top 20 were all Republicans does not mean the Democrats were innocent. In fact, the Dems were actually able to rack up $3,536,995 from the oil and gas industry as well.
Are any of them really working toward bringing down oil prices?
In total, Republicans and Democrats combined, the oil and gas industry contributed $19,900,379 during the 2005-2006 election cycle.
